Motivation With Joe: 3 Ways To Improve Your Company Culture, Zappos-style

I recently had the pleasure of going on the Zappos company tour in Las Vegas, Nevada. Zappos offers a tour of their company culture that shows off how they were able to create such great business growth and financial success. Zappos has proven that once you create a great company culture, sales will follow.

Starting off the tour, you’re taken into a theater to watch an introductory culture video. Tony Hsieh, the acting CEO, and Fred Mossler, the former Senior VP of Merchandising and currently “No Title” position holder (Because, as Zappos writes, “…we couldn’t think of a title for him and the ‘No Title’ position enables him to oversee a variety of departments within Zappos”) were the stars of the video.

The group was split into two and was assigned three tour guides to run the tour. We saw many unique company elements, including a shake weight dance at the HR department, the Zappos minibar, the napping station and the 80s room.

While taking the tour of the Zappos space and understanding how they provide service to their employees, I learned three things that I would love to share with you today.

1. Make employees feel special: Everything they do at Zappos makes the people that work there feel special. I believe that the culture tour is there to make the Zappos employees feel important. You can see the look in their eyes when you engage with them and they proudly show off their desks and personalized work spaces. Every team member is even given a license plate with their name and the year that they started working with Zappos. People understand that the company cares about them. I feel that it can make all the difference to a person just knowing that they have that support system from their employer.

Joe Apfelbaum: Welcome to CEO Mojo where we motivate business leaders to inspire the world with their stories. I’m Joe Apfelbaum, and today we have with us Julia from Little Pim. Welcome Julia.

Julia: Hey Joe, how’s it going?

Joe Apfelbaum: Thank you very much, so Julia, tell us a little bit about your business, Little Pim.

Julia: Sure, Little Pim is a language teaching program for young children, to help them learn a second language at the age they learn best which is zero to six.

Joe Apfelbaum: So you’ve been in this business for six years now. How have you seen the business grow? Do you see a need in the market for this type of technology?

Julia: You know, we’ve been really fortunate that when we started the business, not as many people knew how important it was to teach their kids a second language at a young age. But over the last few years, there’s just been an explosion of interest in kids learning foreign languages when they’re little, because that’s when it’s really easy for them. When they’re young, it’s like a game. We have a product that can be seen on any screen, any size, anywhere. It’s an mp4 file. It’s a video series. So it makes it really easy to find technology partners, and have our series on places like Leapfrog, and V-tech, we’re on the Kindle, we’re on the Nook, we’re in the iTunes store, of course for Apple devices. It’s just been a really great ride the last few years.

Joe Apfelbaum: So as you’re growing your company, you have to hire new staff, you’ve got to get more talent both in business development and in production. What are some of the challenges you had finding the right people and retaining those people?

Joe: So welcome to another episode of CEO Mojo. I am your host Joe Apfelbaum and today we have a very special guest with us. His name is Hal Elrod. He is author and he wrote multiple books and he is here with us to motivate us. Welcome to the program.
Hal: Joe, thanks for having me man. I — yeah this is exciting. I had a great time when we got to meet in person. You are awesome and I’m excited to be a part of the interview.

Joe: Thank you very much. So a little bit of background about you Hal. You worked at a company, a 200 million dollar knife company and you were the top salesperson. Tell us a little bit about that.

Hal: Yeah, my dream when I was young was to be a radio disc jockey. I started DJing on the radio when I was 15. At 19, I had a bigger job at a bigger radio station and then got a job selling knives at CutCo. A friend of mine was doing it. He was paying himself through college without needing student loans that was kind of appealing. More appealing than my-my radio low wages I was making. So I decided to give it a try and never thought of myself as a salesperson and never thought of myself as an achiever. You know I wasn’t one of those kids in school that like achieved in sports and academics. You know I was kind of a class clown you know that sort of thing and something kind of a flip switched and ten days into the job I had gone onto break the 50 year old company record for the most ever sold in the first fifty days in the western United States for our company and that was kind of the-the first day of the rest of my life when I thought wow we were all capable of you know achieving extraordinary results if we — we really commit to it.
